Monument<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">The Church of San Nicol\u00e1s is conceived as a welcoming space for the Church in Granada, open to everyone, without exception. Following a major restoration project that lasted several years, the church was opened ahead of schedule on March 11, 2022, with a very specific purpose: to provide a space for gathering and prayer for world peace. <\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Located in the heart of the ancient Albaic\u00edn neighborhood and right across from the famous viewpoint that bears its name, this church offers a two-part experience. On the one hand, there\u2019s a cultural tour of the church\u2019s interior, which is completely free to enter; and on the other, there\u2019s the climb up the tower\u2014for which you\u2019ll need to purchase a ticket\u2014offering spectacular panoramic views of the historic sites and the city. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_7 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><div class=\"flex-c gap-12\" data-om-id=\"jsx:\/https:\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45.claudeusercontent.com\/v1\/design\/projects\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45\/serve\/monument-detail.jsx:6548:155:7\"><span data-om-id=\"jsx:\/https:\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45.claudeusercontent.com\/v1\/design\/projects\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45\/serve\/monument-detail.jsx:6626:156:20\" style=\"font-size: small;\">02<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-om-id=\"jsx:\/https:\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45.claudeusercontent.com\/v1\/design\/projects\/019e074e-0e2a-7459-b2c0-2b793436eb45\/serve\/monument-detail.jsx:6548:155:7\">\n<h2>History of the Monastery of San Nicol\u00e1s<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">The history of this church is closely linked to the religious and urban transformation of Granada following the Reconquista, and it has established itself as one of the spiritual centers of the Albaic\u00edn.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"4\">Origin and Founding of the Temple<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">The documented origins of the monument date back to <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"58\">1501<\/b>. The Church of San Nicol\u00e1s belongs to the select group of parishes established in the city by papal bull issued by Cardinal Pedro Gonz\u00e1lez de Mendoza. From its inception, together with the Convent of San Agust\u00edn and the Monastery of Las Tomasas, it formed an important and significant \u201csacred\u201d center within the urban fabric of the historic neighborhood.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"6\">Gothic-Mudejar Architecture and Construction<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The main construction work on the building was completed in <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"64\">1525<\/b> under the direction of master builder Rodrigo Hern\u00e1ndez. Stylistically, the church follows a Gothic-Mudejar architectural style that was very characteristic of the period. It was designed with a rectangular floor plan measuring 19 meters wide by 33 meters long, divided into five distinct sections by four pointed-arch diaphragms resting on elegant corbels, which originally housed five side chapels.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"8\">The Construction of the Tower<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">A few years after the main structure was completed, in <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"44\">1543<\/b>, construction of its distinctive tower was finished. As a testament to its golden age, the structure still bears the carved coat of arms of Francisco Ni\u00f1o de Guevara, who was the seventh archbishop of Granada and under whose leadership the construction of this landmark\u2014visible from throughout the city\u2014was completed. <\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"10\">Centuries of Adversity and Transformation<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">Over the centuries, the building has had to weather numerous natural, historical, and demographic events that altered its appearance and function:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The 1614 Earthquake:<\/b> A powerful earthquake struck the city, causing significant damage to the temple's structure.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Lightning Strike of 1828:<\/b> On February 21 of that year, a bolt of lightning struck the tower directly\u2014a historic event documented in records preserved in the Alhambra archives.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1830 Expansion:<\/b> Improvement and expansion work was undertaken on the facade, creating the current entrance to the church.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Closure of the parish (1842):<\/b> Due to the gradual decline in the number of parishioners in the area, the parish was dissolved, and the church was placed under the jurisdiction of the nearby Church of San Jos\u00e9, marking the beginning of a long period of decline.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"13\">Renaissance and Current Restoration<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">After suffering significant damage (such as the collapse of the sacristy roof in 1924), the church entered a new phase in the 21st century. Thanks to a comprehensive restoration and revitalization project, the facades were stabilized, the roofs were secured, and the tower was reinforced. This allowed for its early reopening on March 11, 2022, with a very specific purpose: to provide a restored space for gathering and praying for world peace, thereby returning this Gothic-Mudejar
