About the Monument
The Cathedral of Granada is one of the must-see tourist attractions in our city, a place where you can enjoy art in its purest form thanks to the fusion of styles, the scale of its interior, and its spectacular façade.
It is currently located in the heart of the city and is one of Granada's most impressive monuments and a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance.
History of the Cathedral of Granada
The history of the cathedral begins on May 21, 1492. On that date, the cathedral chapter was established and the cathedral—dedicated to Our Lady of the Incarnation—was founded, with its headquarters temporarily located, at first, in the Royal Mosque of the Alhambra.
In October 1494, the first relocation of the cathedral took place: the chapter and the bishop’s seat moved from the Alhambra to the Church of Santa María in the Realejo and, later, to San Francisco Casa Grande. In 1502, Pope Alexander VI authorized a new and final relocation.
Despite Queen Isabella’s express wishes, the former mosque was not suitable for housing the new cathedral in a fitting manner, and the idea took hold of building a large, newly designed church in the city center, beginning with the Royal Chapel.
Likewise, the Cathedral of Granada derives its full historical significance from Charles I of Spain’s plan for an imperial city. The Emperor sought to continue the projects begun in 1492 by his maternal grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs.
A masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance
The Cathedral of Granada features a monumental façade, designed by Alonso Cano, and houses a magnificent altarpiece inside. Its Main Chapel is a true gem of the Spanish Renaissance, which can be viewed from the central nave.
It features an unusual circular choir, perhaps inspired by the Italian concept of a “perfect building.” The three large arches on the façade offer a spectacular prelude to the cathedral.
Numerous chapels line the side aisles, each representing different periods and styles and housing exceptional works of art, among which the altarpiece of the Virgen de la Antigua—Granada’s first patron saint—stands out.
