About SILENTIA

Sobre el monumento

SILENTIA (from the Latin «silences») is the name of the project developed in Granada, conceived as an immersive night visit in the majestic Cartuja Monastery of Granada. WHEN THE NOISES OF THE WORLD DEAFEN US, WHEN THE RUSH ACCELERATES US BLINDING US TO THE ESSENTIAL, COMES "SILENTIA". It is a necessary stop in the desert of our life, an oasis that predisposes us to listen to what really matters.

The Carthusian Order: The Charisma of SOLITUDE AND SILENCE

The Carthusian order was born in the 11th century, when Bruno of Cologne was called by God to found a new way of understanding monastic life. This charisma that Saint Bruno received is that of one who tries to combine the solitary life of the hermit with the community life of the cenobite. Under the protection of Saint Hugh of Grenoble, these monks began their adventure on the Mount of Chartreuse, turning the monastery into a "built desert" where each cell functions as a cave.

The life of a Carthusian is truly austere and strict. A total silence envelops their daily life, interrupted only during the hours of community prayer. In this environment, words yield their place to service; there is no dialogue among them, their diet lacks meat, and fasting is a constant. The structure of the monastery is almost labyrinthine to encourage transit without interfering with each other's solitude. For them, simplicity and moderation are a song of praise, under the motto on their coat of arms: "the cross remains while the world turns".

SILENTIA: A Sensory and Immersive Experience

This project seeks to be an immersive reality that allows us to get inside the walls of the monastery and become life companions of a true monk for a few moments. SILENTIA takes us into their WORLD, allowing us to experience their history, their way of praying, how they face death, and how they enjoy giving their lives. It is a dive into Carthusian spirituality that awakens the sensitivity of the heart.

SILENTIA is the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies in a space dominated by MEDIEVAL sensitivity (The Era of Monasteries) built in the Modern era (16th-18th centuries). Unlike a regular visit, this proposal uses videomapping, conceptual installations, and theatrical lighting to guide the visitor's gaze, creating a visual narrative based on the use and intensity of light.

Eight Spaces, Eight Silences

The comprehensive tour through the preserved rooms of the Cartuja Monastery of Granada is divided into eight transcendental moments, designed to offer "deafening silences" to the visitor's heart:

  • Desired and chosen silences: The beginning of introspection in the monastic environment.
  • The Silence of everyday life: Immersion in the life of the cell and the routine of prayer.
  • Life in Community: The transit through shared spaces such as the Claustrillo or the Refectory.
  • The Silence of Transit: A profound intervention in the PROFUNDIS Room to reflect on the fleeting nature of life.
  • The Silence of Stone and History: Where the architecture of the Church and the Sacristy dialogue with light.
  • The Man and the Charisma: An instant to understand the spiritual dialogue between Saint Bruno, Christ, and Mary.
  • The Silence of Prayer and Triumph: The culmination of the experience in the Tabernacle (Sagrario), where beauty gives glory to God.
  • The Silence and Solitude: The closing of the voluntary retreat in search of authenticity and true life.

SILENTIA bets on digital transformation while always respecting the monumental container and its spiritual conception. It is a unique opportunity to discover how, from medieval Europe to the present day, the longing for solitude can be merged with the need for community.
